Raymond Abdy (Charters Towers)

With exciting study and sporting success ahead, Raymond Abdy and his family were devastated when Raymond was in a motor vehicle accident nine days before his 18th birthday in 1998 which left him with a brain injury. After years of intensive rehabilitation Raymond was left with right sided weakness, limited speech, no movement of eyes and poor memory.   Like so many others Raymond suffered with poor short term memory, and poor concentration. Despite these significant challenges Raymond retained his love of sport and successfully participated  in many athletics events internationally and locally in the category of AWD (Athletes with a Disability) F 37 (Moderate to minimal hemiplegia).

In October 2017, Raymond travelled to Boca Raton in Florida (USA)   to receive 2 treatments of Perispinal Etanercept. Following this treatment Raymond has had a reduction in muscle spasticity in his right side ( tongue, jaw, hands,  leg and feet)  resulting in  much improved walking,  improved speech, the ability to move his eyes and the straightening of his fingers and toes meaning improved motor skills. Raymond describes one of the best things about receiving the Perispinal Etanercept Treatment was the removal of “black cloud in his thinking” and being about to process things and say what he could previously think but not express.

All of the improvements Raymond has experienced (and has maintained) was highlighted when he proudly carried the baton in the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay through his home in Charters Towers in 2018.  With the wonderful improvements he has received following the Perispinal Etanercept Treatment which Raymond describes as “miraculous” he continues to play sport and enjoy life more easily.  Like so many other Raymond and his family are pushing to get the Perispinal Etanercept Treatment available for himself to have additional treatment and others who desperately need this by supporting the work of the Stroke Recovery Trial Fund who are funding a world first clinical trial for this treatment which is currently underway:  http://strokerecoverytrialfund.org/
